Amigos de las Americas (AMIGOS) and Continental Airlines are proud to announce the Grand Prize Winner of the 2010 Continental Latin American Photo Contest. Rebeca Beeman of Portland, Oregon, took the winning photo titled "Callejon (Alley)" in Guanajuato, Mexico where she was living at the time.

This year, we received more than 1,000 photo submissions from all over the world. Beeman's photo was chosen by a panel of judges from Continental and AMIGOS. As the grand prize winner, Beeman will receive two round-trip Continental Airlines tickets to a destination of her choice in Latin America.

Beeman snapped the winning photo in Guanajuato where she recently spent several years designing and running a digital storytelling program at a girls' shelter. "One of my favorite things to do when I lived in Guanajuato was to wander the city, photographing the colorful buildings, alleys, and hills," she said. This particular photograph captures a little girl proudly returning to her mom with freshly purchased tortillas tucked into her bag.

As a teenager, Beeman was an AMIGOS Volunteer in rural Mexico. In college, she returned to Latin America to serve on AMIGOS Project Staff three times. Her experience with the organization set the tone for her work. "I am an artist and educator," Beeman explains, "I believe that art and documentary work can be a powerful tool for self-expression and social change...and I especially love working with young people, rooted in my time with AMIGOS, to facilitate their personal growth and positive development through art."

Sponsored by Continental and AMIGOS, the contest is intended to demonstrate the beauty and excitement of the seven Latin American countries where both the airline and the nonprofit group have a presence. This is the sixth annual Latin America photo contest the organizations have sponsored together. AMIGOS is a Houston-based international nonprofit organization that empowers teenagers and young adults to develop leadership skills and increase multi-cultural awareness through training and community service in Latin America. - First Registered American-Dutch Culture Fund

A new Culture Fund has been established at the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds: the Chris Devries Fund for the Arts. This is the first American-Dutch Culture Fund registered at the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. There will be international cooperation in the areas of fundraising and spending from this fund.

Chris Devries' widow and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds recently signed this cooperation agreement. The objective of the Chris Devries Fund for the Arts is to offer financial support to American and Dutch musicians, preferably singers. EUR 50,000 will initially be available for this objective, divided over a period of ten years.

Chris Devries

Chris Devries was the president of Citibank Netherlands and the chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce. His devotion to young musical talent, whom he supported and coached, was one of his main characteristics. After his sudden death in 2008, his wife and several friends established a foundation that supported young musicians and artists; its motto was 'you have to be nice to people'. At the beginning of 2010, the foundation was changed to a Culture Fund registered by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds: the Chris Devries Fund for the Arts. Citibank Netherlands recently allocated a considerable amount to this new fund.

The original foundation, which is transferring the EUR 50,000 to the Prins

Bernhard Cultuurfonds for the Chris Devries Fund for the Arts, will remain active in order to acquire additional funds, both in the United States and in the Netherlands. The goal is to significantly increase the capital. In connection to this, an American Friends Fund will be established at the Koning Boudewijn Foundation Belgium, in order to obtain 501(c)(3) status from the US.

The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds

The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds' mission is to support cultural and nature preservation projects in The Netherlands. The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds enables foundations to establish the registration of Culture Funds. By cooperating in establishing a Culture Fund, continuity is realized and the fiscal advantages continue to exist. The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds now uses its expertise to manage over 250 registered Culture Funds for foundations but also for private individuals and companies.

The inaugural The Big Draw LA event will be held during the month of October as a citywide celebration of drawing, creating opportunities for people of all ages to discover that drawing enhances how they see, think and invent. The Big Draw LA, inspired by the highly popular United Kingdom program launched in 2000, will be the first event of its kind on the West Coast. The Big Draw LA is presented by Ryman Arts—an arts education program that fosters the education of gifted young artists in Southern California.

"It's more important than ever to make art accessible to people of all ages and walks of life," says Diane Brigham, Executive Director of Ryman Arts. Citing the decline of arts education in schools, as well as funding cuts to local community arts organizations, she adds, "Drawing is an important tool in a variety of fields, and The Big Draw LA will get everyone—young people, professional artists, seniors, scientists and our teens—drawing together."

As a result, The Big Draw LA will inspire Angelenos to expand the boundaries of drawing, experimenting not only with pencils, paint, and charcoal, but also with sand and choreographed movement—and anything else that makes a mark. For more information and to learn about drawing events throughout Los Angeles visit www.thebigdrawla.org.

Make Your Mark in the Park

Ryman Arts' event for the month-long celebration will be the "Make Your Mark in the Park" activity. The event is being held on Sunday, October 17 at 1 p.m. in Exposition Park, in collaboration with Exposition Park, the museums in the park and the University of Southern California. Ryman Arts' students and teaching artists will help the public create a continuous drawing on paper that rolls out and winds its way around the park, through the Rose Garden, by the steps of the Natural History Museum and past the California African American Museum, around the dinosaur sculptures and past the soccer field. The continuous drawing project will be photographed and ultimately be showcased as a "scrolling panorama" online.

According to Brigham, participation in The Big Draw LA is open to organizations of all sizes and types—from established institutions to small groups—and all are invited to organize an event during the month of October. Organizations to date who have signed up to organize their own The Big Draw LA events include the Huntington Library, Garden and Art Collections; Skirball Cultural Center; and Fowler Museum at the University of California at Los Angeles. Organizations who are interested in participating in The Big Draw LA or sponsorship opportunities are invited to visit www.thebigdrawla.org for more Information.

About The Big Draw and The Campaign for Drawing

The Big Draw was started by the Guild of St. George, a nonprofit organization founded by 19th century critic and educator John Ruskin. Now led by the Campaign for Drawing in London, the aim is to raise awareness of drawing's power as a tool for learning, observation, creativity, and social and cultural engagement. In 2009, more than 1,300 Big Draw events took place across the United Kingdom and internationally.

About Ryman Arts

Ryman Arts provides gifted teens the opportunity to reach their artistic potential through free high-level art education in a rigorous and nurturing studio environment. In addition to artistic training, Ryman Arts students build self-discipline and confidence, and receive college and career guidance that helps position them for success in their careers and lives. Ryman Arts currently teaches talented high school students from more than 200 schools in Southern California.

The program began in 1990 to honor the memory of legendary Disney artist and mentor Herbert D. Ryman. The core program includes sequential studio courses that emphasize advanced drawing and painting skills. Courses, taught by professional teaching artists, foster students' artistic development and provide the knowledge they need to pursue higher education and careers in the arts.
